The unknown thing

I was born under the sun and stars and rain

I was shapeless and unknown

I had no form or purpose

I rejoiced in the sun and I cried in the rain

I could not be defined

.

They came with sticks and stones

To put me in my place

Not knowing I was already there

I was already how I was meant to be

I was not meant to be more

.

I hid myself away

I shaped a carapace of steel and riveted it with spikes

So heavy I couldn't move

So dark the sun could no longer reach me

After I time I was left alone

.

Yet sometimes at dawn

Before the world wakes

I creep out

And feel the first rays of the sun on my skin

As I did when I was a child
